Baby alpaca does not come from baby alpacas, as one might think. Baby refers to a fiber fineness of between 20-23 microns (micrometers).
It is one of the softest alpaca qualities used for hand knitting yarns. The soft fibers of alpaca together with the smooth surface of silk result in a quality that feels particularly soft and cool on the skin. Both alpaca and silk have good heat-regulating properties. Silk is also uniquely moisture-absorbent. Alpaca does not contain lanolin.
For machine washing, we recommend washing all wool items separately in the wool wash program to treat them as gently as possible. Spin gently and dry the garment flat, preferably on a towel. Never wash hand-knitted items in a laundry net/wash bag. This creates friction which can cause the item to become matted.
